It’s all the rage to “juice for health”. It’s often referred to as supplementing nutrients with real food. But, is it all that it’s cracked up to be? Let’s find out, and separate fact from fiction.
1. Juicing Is Expensive
I can’t predict the long term for any individual but myself, so I won’t. However, to my estimation, it’s probably cheaper to juice when in comes to future medical bills.
However, many people are concerned about current, and on-going costs. So, I guess it really depends on the value of your health, and the depth of your knowledge.
In other words, pay the extra for organic plant matter, or learn more about indoor/outdoor gardening, or wild foraging.
Is it more expensive? It isn’t so cut and dry. More expensive than what, I’d like to ask in reply.
2. It’s Messy To Juice
It’s true, in general, the juicer is a pain to clean. However, if you make it a habit to clean it after every single use, you will be more motivated to make the next batch. Feel free to even keep some in a Mason (or similar) jar in the fridge for a day so that you can make it in batches.
Also, please don’t be like my dad (love you Dad!) and actually take the juicer fully apart in order to clean it.
3. It Hurts To Juice
Yes! A lot of time, juicing can be painful. Why? It is cleansing by nature. Your body’s cells stop craving the garbage that they have become adapted to, and complain when they don’t get it.
So, instead, your body eventually becomes used to the new batch of clean nutrients, and thrives, but not without some pain-before-gain in most cases.
4. You Become An Outcast
It’s true. You are a weirdo if you decide to be a 100% juicing machine.
Forget about grabbing some Street Meat from the BBQ man/woman/person in front of your local department store, forget about grabbing Wings with the fam, forget about turkey/ham/whatever dinner… you are cleansing my friend. Bring a pint of fresh green juice to your next invite and rejoice.
People laugh at you if you juice or not, doesn’t matter.
5. You Miss Your Old Foods
When you juice for nutrition and overall health, you stop eating the old schmeng. This point lines up with point #3. It hurts to juice. It may be a difficult transition. You chose to clean your body because you believe it is beneficial to healing. It may be a tricky line to walk. Mmmmm chocolate bars and potato chips.
6. It Tastes Like Pond Scum
Yuck. Juiced kale tastes a little weird and is difficult to swallow (unless you get the “baby” variety). However, of the items that can be juiced… there are some of the sweet variety.
Add in beets or carrots to yummy it up. Fruit, they say, isn’t bad to mix with greens either.
7. There Is Too Much Waste
It really depends on your juicer. But yes, there can be a great deal of waste. The wetter your “output” the more juice that was left behind. You could run it through again, or opt for a better juicer. They range from $40 to $5000 as far as I know.
Also, some of the pulp can be re-used to make soups, crackers, and other raw or cooked foods if you are in the mood.
8. Green Is An Unappealing Colour
I use Mason Jars to consume my green juice. Plus, I am the one that usually makes it. Therefore, I know precisely what colour it is. For one reason or another that has never been a problem for me.
However, when offering it to children, or others, it could be a tough sell. But sometimes, it could be as simple as offering it in an attractive drinking vessel to get them to try it. For others, you may need to dump in some frozen blueberries to convert your concoction into a more palatable colour (and perhaps taste).
9. You Have To Drink Too Much
There are a lot of suggestions as to the amount of greens one should be consuming in a given day. My thinking is, that it’s easier to consume more greens when in the liquid form. So, if you weren’t meeting the status quo anyway, drinking your greens isn’t going to make it worse. Agreed?
10. You Lose All The Darn Fiber
This is an argument amongst all the nutrition professionals per se (for which I am not). However, those same professionals often like to live by the idea of “complicate to profit” so I tend to lean towards what resonates with me than what “conventional wisdom” or “conventional conventional wisdom” suggests.
My thinking is… that if you are in a situation where a direct “injection” of nutrition is needed for healing purposes, than juicing can be a great benefit to you. However, for daily lifestyle, I personally like to consume a green smoothie, which, as far as I understand, leaves the fibre intact.
Call To Action:
1) Buy a juicer from Amazon or Walmart
2) Buy some produce
3) Run it through your machine
4) Drink it
5) Please reuse or compost the fibre
