Taking good multivitamins each day can be very helpful for someone who is in danger of developing cataracts. As a matter of fact, studies have shown that there can be about a 27 percent decrease in the development of cataracts when taking a multivitamin that is high in antioxidants.

Whenever possible, supplement your diet with vitamins A and C. These two vitamins are known antioxidants, which can work to help protect the body against the bombardment of free radicals. This is very important if you want to be able to promote healthy vision and prevent cataracts. It is recommended to take about 2,500mg of vitamin C and 5,000 IU of vitamin A (or beta carotene).

It is also a good idea to look at how much zeaxanthin and lutein that you are getting in your diet, as these supplements are both known for helping to cut down on the chances of developing cataracts. Approximately 15 to 30mg of lutein and 2 mg of zeaxanthin each day will suffice. Here are some good tips to cut the chances of cataracts.

Bilberry is another supplement that works as a vasodilator to help boost the blood flow throughout the eyes while increasing capillary and wall tissue strength. Think about taking off your sunglasses more. While your sunglasses are crucial for blocking harmful rays of the sun from damaging your eyes, they can also block some of the wavelengths that are needed to nourish your eyes and promote good health. Letting a little bit of sun through from time to time can be helpful.

Smoking cigarettes should be avoided at all costs, as they contain many harsh ingredients that are not good for your body. When you smoke, the chemicals in the smoke gets into your eyes and can cause even more damage to your eyes.

Always have your eyes checked. There are a lot of people that simply forego regular eye exams, which can be very dangerous to do. It is important to see a specialist to have your eyes checked on a regular basis to not only keep track of your eye health but to also detect any potential problems before they start to get worse.

If it seems as though you have cataracts developing, you will have a chance to have it corrected with some of the many advancements today in terms of treatment. Today, patients no longer have to wait to have the cataract surgery that they need. The longer that you end up waiting for treatment, the more you are cutting down your options. Seeing your doctor on a regular basis will help you to detect and monitor your cataracts and then look for the right treatments.
