Honesty about your emotions is the best policy for fending off panic attacks. Panic attacks can tend to strike when emotions become too overwhelming for them to deal with. One way to prevent future panic attacks is to keep your emotions in check.
When you feel a panic attack coming on, fight your fear with logic. Is someone trying to harm you? Obviously you are safe, so use that rationale to overcome your fear.
If you are prone to frequent panic attacks or heightened anxiety, set a timer every half hour to take breathing breaks. Every half an hour, you should take deep breaths for about a minute. This helps you to refocus your thoughts and replenish the oxygen supplies to your brain. This should quickly become an habit for you.
You can make an attempt to work yourself right out of having a panic attack. Your thoughts and feelings don’t have to determine how you behave. In fact, do the opposite of what your negative feelings make you desire to do. Understand that your feelings should not control what you do.
You may have to treat other medical conditions in order to totally control your panic attacks. Panic attacks can be the cause of an underlying condition that you may have. If you believe you suffer from a psychological condition, focus on treating it and the panic attacks will disappear.
During the onset of an attack, don’t fight it in a strenuous way as this could exacerbate the condition. Rather than doing this, you should focus on something else that will occupy your mind, whether it be music, breathing exercises or another enjoyable distraction. Remind yourself that it will all be over momentarily. Trying to swim against the flow of the panic attack and fighting it could lengthen the amount of time the incident lasts for.
If you feel a panic attack coming on, try listening to some music. Focusing on the lyrics of calm, soothing music in a quiet environment can really help. By paying attention to the music and not your symptoms, you will more easily be able to relax and avoid panic.
Concentrating on exhaling rather than inhaling is the key to getting the most out of breathing techniques while a panic attack is in progress. It’s normal to inhale short, quick breaths during the attack. The important thing is to hold the breath and breathe out slowly.
Panic attacks are not a sign of bad character or or even a sign of weakness on your part. In fact, enduring and dealing with these attacks can make you a stronger person! When or if you have your next attack, remember the advice given here and you should be able to handle it even better. In addition to reducing your panic attacks, you may also be able to completely eliminate them from your life.
