Thanksgiving is the holiday that involves sitting in front of a television and eating too much food, which leads to obesity at worst or a feeling bloating at best. These are not healthy conditions. However, instead of having an unhealthy Thanksgiving, you can take steps to be healthy. You can choose products and activities that will not cause you to grow bigger in your gut.
Exercise — Before you indulge in your meal, you will want to exercise. You also can exercise after the meal, but if you do it before the meal, you are more likely to follow through the plan. Taking a walk, entering in a Turkey Trot or 5K race, or playing football instead of watching it are good ways to get exercise to burn those calories. Take a walk before and after the meal, experts recommended.
Eat Breakfast — Although many people do not indulge in breakfast or lunch on Thanksgiving, experts have found that if you eat small meals, you are more likely to control your appetite later. You won’t be tempted to eat just because you see the food in front of you. Try an egg on toast or a bowl of cereal for breakfast.
Choose healthy ingredients — When you make dinner or bring a side dish, choose food that is healthier. Use less sugar and fat and items with fewer calories. Some items include fat-free chicken broth to baste the turkey and make gravy, sugar substitutes or fruit purees, and yogurt or fat-free sour cream for dips. When you go to buy those healthier ingredients, you want to save money as much as possible.
Choose portions wisely — Thanksgiving is a time when the eyes are bigger than the stomach. You have so many choices and foods available that you want to eat everything. This will lead to disaster. Instead, look over the table and pick what you will eat. Choose smaller portions and leave some back. Pick items you don’t normally get throughout the year. If you choose your plate carefully, you probably will have room for dessert. You won’t overeat, and you’ll be able to enjoy the others the next day.
Taste the flavors — So often, we gobble everything down as fast as we can. Half time is only 20 minutes long after all. However, what you should do is eat your food slowly. Putting your fork down between bites and tasting each mouthful are ways to enjoy your meal. You will not want to overeat doing this.
Don’t indulge on alcohol — While Thanksgiving and being with family should be celebrated and toasted with wine and alcoholic drinks, you don’t want to have too many. Besides that getting drunk will take away your enjoyment of your party, it also adds too many calories that you will have to work off your body later. The same is true for soda. Drink water or tea, which has healthy components in it.
Think about maintaining weight, not loss — Many people believe that have to lose weight during the holidays. This goal is not possible. You are better to consider that you need to maintain your weight through the holiday feasting.
Talk more, eat less — Thanksgiving is about being grateful for your blessings, that includes family and friends. If you are talking, listening and enjoying yourself, you won’t want to eat as much food. Try putting on music and dancing with those gathered at your home. Play games. Do what you need to do to avoid eating too much.
If you follow these tips, you will have a healthier Thanksgiving. You will have more fun. You won’t feel bloated or sleepy. You will enjoy good leftovers the next day. You will be ready to hit the stores for the Black Friday sales.
