Exercising can prevent memory loss. Exercise increases blood flow and the delivery of oxygen to all parts of your body, including the brain. Work on maintaining your body as a whole and your memory will benefit right in step. Exercise will also help prevent diabetes, which can have a bad effect on your memory.

Don’t put yourself at a disadvantage by doubting yourself. The popular consensus is that the older you get, the less you ultimately remember. Actually, this is not always the case. You can actually cause damage to your memory by anticipating memory loss. If someone begins questioning your ability to remember things, this can lead to you having doubts as well. Continuing to believe in the quality of your memory can help immensely.

It can be a source of much frustration if you struggle to remember things that you know are in your brain somewhere. One idea to try is to wipe your mind clean for a second. Go somewhere quiet, relax and breathe deep. Try again to remember the information and it may return.

When it is time to retain something into your memory, “hook” the information together. Connecting parts of information that are related can help you remember the information easier; on the other hand, associating parts of information that are entirely unrelated can also promote good memory. For example, if a student is trying to recall the periodic table symbol for lead, he could memorize “peanut butter (Pb) equals lead.” Making bizarre connections is a very memorable way to learn.

If you want to keep your memory sharp, exercise for at least 20 minutes per day. Just a small amount of exercise every day can be beneficial.

If you’d like to improve your ability to retain information, try visualizing the things that you’re hoping to memorize. When faced with memorizing information from books, find ones that utilize images or charts. You can also try to remember graphs and charts through memory and draw them out.

Even after you are through with school, it is still essential to continue learning as much new information as you can. The part of your brain which helps with memory needs to be used to continue functioning. If that portion of your brain has not been exercised regularly, it will be difficult to remember things.

Do not cram. A better way to remember things is to use study sessions, as opposed to cramming. It is stressful and ineffective to try and learn a new subject, all in one sitting. When you do this, you overwhelm your brain, and don’t recall all that you studied. Schedule study sessions for yourself often so that you can train your brain on a regular basis.

This is unavoidable and a normal part of life. But, you can use the advice from this article and other methods, to help effectively deal with memory loss.
