If you’d like a better memory, try to purge negative thoughts from your mind. Many studies show that extra stress on your mind and body can lead to short-term memory loss and forgetfulness. Ask your doctor about what you can do to relieve your stress.
Sometimes your memory isn’t your problem, it’s actually a lack of attention. If you are not focusing, the information will not be understood correctly and you will not be able to remember it. It is important to clear your thoughts and concentrate on what is going on around you. Once the moment has passed, play it over again in your mind to commit it to memory.
An easy trick to remembering the name of a new person is to think of someone else with the identical name, then connect the two in your mind. If necessary, think of a celebrity or high profile person with the same name. By connecting the new face with a familiar name, you should be able to recall the new individual’s name.
Ensure your water intake is as high as possible. The brain is mainly constructed from water. When it gets dehydrated, it often loses it’s sharpness and you may feel more lethargic. You may struggle with remembering old information and retaining new information. Drink at least eight glasses of water every day.
If you need to remember material that you are studying, outline the information as you study. Playing around with the outline or bullet-pointing different study topics can organize the material in such a way that you can easily learn and recall it on demand. It is not necessary to make a formal outline or one that is exceedingly long; in most cases, any simple grouping of information will do the trick.
Work on linking the material you wish to commit to memory with something you already have memorized. If you build some links this will help you learn new information and put it in your long term memory. Plus, this relational exercise can speed up your memorization process.
By getting physical exercise, you are greatly increasing your mental capacity. If you keep your body fit by working out, you’ll increase the capability of your brain to remember things, and retain information. Exercising also carries oxygen to the brain, decreasing your risk of developing diseases that cause memory loss. Exercise also enhances the activation of chemicals that are essential for protecting the cells of the brain.
Stress can interfere with your memory and make you more forgetful. If you are learning something new or trying to recall the location of an object, try to relax first. Let yourself have time to remember instead of losing patience and getting upset with yourself.
Have you every had something you wanted to remember just on the edge of your mind and you couldn’t quite get at it? A good way to remember is to relax and know that this feeling comes to everyone. Relax and breathe, then start saying memories or other words that you associate with the forgotten word. Engaging in this exercise in a relaxed manner will usually help you remember the word.
Failure of your memory can be irritating and depressing, but look for ways to combat the loss. If you apply the tips you have just read, your skills should improve quickly. Add in some effort and you will find your memory better than it’s ever been.
