How Humor Can Help You With Your Memory

Throughout each day, set aside several minutes to practice deep breathing exercises. Every hour or so, inhale deeply through your nose and hold five seconds before releasing it. The extra oxygen will fuel your brain, making it sharp and therefore improving the chances of you being able to recall and remember information.

If it is necessary for you to recall information, a useful way to do this is to link the information together. You can link together related facts or even link relevant material with completely irrelevant material. For instance, if a chemistry student wants to memorize the periodic table symbol for lead, a phrase to use can be “peanut butter (or Pb) and lead”. It’s a bizarre connection, but that’s what makes it memorable.

Always drink plenty of water. Your brain is primarily made up of water; if it gets dehydrated, you will begin to feel tired and your brain will not be as sharp. When you’re not feeling well, you’ll struggle to remember things you know, and will have a hard time remembering anything new. The goal that most experts recommend is to try to consume between eight and ten glasses of water daily.

To aid your memory, try connecting the new information you are trying to remember with knowledge you already possess. If you learn to tag new pieces of short term memory information onto existing long term memories, you will have an easier time of recollection. You may even be able to accelerate the rate at which you are able to commit new information to permanent memory.

Avoid trying to cram a large amount of information into your head. Instead, learn things little by little in study sessions. Trying to take in something new in one sitting very rarely works. Your mind will be overwhelmed, and you will not remember the information for very long. You need to schedule multiple small study sessions to practice memory techniques.

Writing things down is the best way to remember important information. Your brain area that controls memory functions will receive blood flow, and memories will thus be exercised. If you write detailed lists or keep a diary, you can increase your short-term memory abilities.
