Pregnancy and birth are two of the most natural, beautiful miracles in the world. Pregnancy is an incredible process from beginning to end, but there are a lot of things that can go wrong if you aren’t careful. Pregnant women are encouraged to eat the right foods, abstain from certain habits, avoid high-intensity movements, and participate in other healthy activities.

This is especially important if you want a natural birth, but it all must start at the very beginning, even before you know you’re pregnant. Every woman who’s trying to get pregnant should live she already is – for her health and the health of her baby.

Drinking and Smoking

There’s no way to know how much alcohol and how many cigarettes can affect the unborn child, but there is research to show that the more you drink, the worse the defects will be. It’s best to avoid alcohol and nicotine completely when you’re trying to conceive.

Caffeine Intake

You’ll also want to limit your caffeine intake. Not only does too much coffee, tea, and soda affect your chances of becoming pregnant, it can also have a negative effect on you and the baby. This is because the fetus’s metabolism can’t handle caffeine the same way as yours. It can raise your baby’s heart rate and blood sugar and increase your chances of miscarrying or delivering prematurely.

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) suggests that women should consume less than 200 milligrams of caffeine per day, which is about one cup of coffee. As soon as you start trying for a baby, consider cutting way back on your caffeine intake.

Food Dangers

There are some foods that carry extra risks for those who are pregnant as well. Most common is fish, which often contains mercury. When it comes to your baby, mercury is a poison and greatly increases your risk of having a miscarriage. It’s even worse if the fish is raw, like in sushi.

This theory is based on the fact that automobile accidents have caused placental abruption and other pregnancy complications. Strenuous and jarring movements are known to cause a myriad of complications in pregnancy. Drive carefully and avoid workouts that are beyond your physical capacity.
