James McCormack calls himself “Pharmacist, Professor, Medication Mythbuster, and Healthy Skeptic at the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of British Columbia.”
We can add to that: singer, podcaster, and humorist about important messages. He Tweets as @medmyths and calls his website “Medication Mythbusters.” That’s where his BS Medicine podcasts are posted. BS stands for Best Science, but it has the other connotation as well. It’s also where McCormack’s music parody videos are posted:
- Bridge Over Diagnosis (parody of Simon & Garfunkel)
- Choosing Wisely (parody of Pharrell Williams’ “Happy”)
- Eat Mediterranean (parody of The Eagles’ “Hotel California”)
- Bohemian Polypharmacy (parody of Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody”)
- Viva La Evidence (parody of Coldplay’s “Viva La Vida”)
- and other videos, including one of my favorites, starring Hitler in “The Surrogate Battle – is lower always better?” – which I once used in an auditorium as a crowd warmup at a health care journalism conference.
I finally met McCormack at the 4th annual Preventing Overdiagnosis conference in Barcelona, and recorded this podcast interview with him.
With the overdiagnosis theme in mind, here is McCormack’s “The End of Guidelines,” a parody of the Traveling Wilburys classic song, “End of the Line.” But I heartily encourage you to check out his entire playlist.
Let’s not forget the videos by the self-proclaimed ZDoggMD (Damania Zubin), with such titles as “It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Sepsis”… “Doc Vader on Anti-Vaxxers”…”Can’t Feel My Face”…”An EHR State of Mind.”
Thanks to The National Institute for Health Care Management Foundation for providing us with a grant to produce these podcasts for one year, funding which is coming to an end. We will continue to produce the podcasts whenever possible in the future.
