Study: Cannabis Can Reduce Seizures by 39% for Epilepsy Patients

Epilepsy is a brain disorder in which clusters of nerve cells, or neurons, in the brain sometimes signal abnormally.

Stories of cannabis’s abilities to alleviate seizures have been around for about 150 years but interest in medical marijuana has increased sharply in the last decade with the help of legalization campaigns. Scientists have started to focus on the potential benefits of CBD, one of the main compounds in cannabis. CBD does not cause a “high” or pose the same type of risks that researchers have identified for THC, such as addiction and cognitive impairment.

A new study involving 11 epilepsy centers in United States shows that a drug made from a medical marijuana derivative can reduce seizures in children and young adults with epilepsy. They claimed that a 120-patient trial showed patients taking Epidiolex were able to reduce their seizures by 39 percent.

“This shows that cannabinoids can produce compelling and clinically important data and represent a highly promising new class of medications, hopefully in a range of conditions,”

Cannabinoids are active receptors found within the cannabis plant and the human body.

According to the National Cancer Institute, cannabinoids

“activate specific receptors found throughout the body to produce pharmacologic effects, particularly in the central nervous system and the immune system.”

According to another study Marijuana may be able to reduce seizures by suppressing genes related to epilepsy. New data released by Marijuana Business Daily shows that the U.S. cannabis industry will add $44 billion to the nation’s economy by 2020.
