A simple, but helpful, strategy for remembering things is to write them down. Keep a notebook, a journal or write detailed lists to constantly help your ability to remember items you may need in the future.

When you are studying and committing a certain subject matter to memory, it is probably best to organize study notes into piles of related subject groups instead of studying random topics. Studies have proven that a subject is more likely to remember something that was organized properly, rather than clusters of random information.

Do not cram for when studying. Give yourself plenty of breaks. If you try to cram in all the information at once, then you will have difficulty recalling it on the exam because the brain needed more time to learn the information. However, you must use caution. Although you need to give your mind a periodic break from studying, you have to make sure that you allow yourself plenty of time to memorize the material, too. Consequently, it is far more effective to study periodically than trying to cram everything in right before your big test.

When you need to commit something to memory, it helps to actually speak it out loud. When you learn something new, such as a name, say it out loud. By hearing their name spoken, you are more likely to recall it at another time. If you don’t mind being heard, do this several times for best results.

Enhance your memory by using the idea of a memory tree. Large or important things are like the base of the tree. The specific details should branch off of this, forming the “limbs” of the tree. Tiny details can be seen as leaves sprouting from branches of more general knowledge. Visualizing this kind of information in your head can be helpful.

It is important to always get adequate sleep each night. Studies have proven that getting the right amount of sleep is crucial to memory function. If you lack concentration, you won’t be able to convert short-term memory into long-term memory.

Many people find that writing in a journal is very useful. You should write about five things you enjoy every day. Alternatively, you can write down five positive things that happened that day. This form of writing increases your mood, and your brain creates stronger memory associations when you are feeling happy.

For those who don’t believe that laughter is the best medicine, you might be surprised to learn that laughing can actually help you strengthen your memory. When you listen to the jokes and try to determine their punchlines, your brain’s areas for creativity and learning are triggered. You should laugh often and make others laugh as well so that your brain and their brains are working well.

Your inability to remember events or information may be frustrating at times, but there are steps you can take to reduce these occurrences.
